Changing woman is a myth amongst many Native American peoples. Each myth varies some but they are all based on life cycles and the seasons. Birth, maturing, growing old and dying. Changing Woman is reborn every year.
My painting represents the cycles by the thread coming off the spool at birth, then weaving through the painting to show the different phases ending at the top as the soul leaves the body. The butterfly wing with the needle sews the story of transformation together.
Changing Woman is known for wearing white shells. She emerges from the white shell in my painting as a way to represent her new birth every Spring.
